Abstract: Although ancient Bengal is rich in history and heritage, it is possible to know only partial history due to insufficiency of sources. In the absence of reliable written information about ancient Bengal history, archaeological sources can be considered as sources of historiography. Archaeological sources prove that before the historical era, there was human migration in Bengal. Artifacts of the prehistoric period are found in Bengal, but as no formal excavations have been carried out, it is not possible to give detailed and accurate details on this subject. Even during the Maurya, Shunga and Kushan eras, it was not possible to know much about the history of Bengal. An inscription from the reign of Emperor Ashoka in the Maurya period and terracotta plaques from the Shunga period have been found in Mahasthangarh excavations. According to the sources found in archaeological excavations, it can be said that ancient Bengal was rich in archeological edifices. However, very few archetypes exist today. An idea about the various variations of ancient buildings can also be obtained from the identification of this glorious chapter of ancient Bengal from archaeological findings, discoveries and literary sources. A picture of society, culture, religion and economic conditions of ancient Bengal is also revealed through archaeological edifices.
