Abstract: One of the most successful revolts in the history of resistance movement and struggle in the 19th century was the peasant revolt of Sirajganj. The special aspect of this rebellion was that the common peasants or subjects of Bengal were not against the British but against the native landlords, which is famous for many reasons in the history of the Indian subcontinent. With the positive attitude of the British, this revolt systematically culminated in a victory of the common people. The revolt was conducted through strikes and legal battles by the peasant community against unfair injustices including illegal taxation by native landlords. After the death of Dwarkanath Tagore, the founder of the famous Jorasanko family of Kolkata, his son Devendranath Tagore took charge of the Zamindari of Shahjadpur. The Peasant’s Revolt took place in 1872 as a result of the inhumane treatment of the subjects by him, along with other zamindars, who imposed exorbitant taxes on the peasants and nonpayment of taxes. The Bengal Tenancy Act was enacted in 1885 mainly as a result of this rebellion. The research work has been conducted to present this as one of the most successful peasant revolts in history to the present generation.
