Abstract: Dhaka Medical College, the first higher medical educational institution in East Bengal was established in 1946. In the beginning, this medical college was not well equipped with necessary modern equipment and there was a dearth of enough number of teachers also. Anatomy was included in the First Year curriculum but at the beginning there was a shortage of teachers to teach and a shortage of human cadavers to teach with. The deadlock ended when after a few months new teachers were appointed, equipment was imported and the supply of human cadavers increased. Dhaka Medical College did not face social or religious restrictions for dissection of human bodies. Even separate rooms were not provided for female students. Both male and female students dissected the human dead bodies together. Since the independence of Bangladesh in, the Anatomy Department has improved and progressed greatly and all kinds of deficiencies are filled and modernized by furnishing with modern equipment. It is currently a self- contained Department. Every year 100 to 120 students are admitted in the Dhaka Medical College and the Department helps them to complete the course by making all kinds of instructional arrangements. As a result, they become proficient by acquiring knowledge about the human anatomy.
