Abstract: Even though Bengali is recognized as the state language of independent Bangladesh, the language had to go through a long bumpy road to achieve its current status. Before establishing the statehood of Bangladesh through liberation war, Bengali language was least used in the arena of legal practice due to lack of state patronization. After the liberation war, the Constitution was written in Bengali and that marked the initiation of using Bengali language in legal practices. However, such initiative was hindered due to various obstacles. Lack of sufficient terminologies is considered as one of the prominent obstacles. In order to increase the use of Bengali language, government circular has been declared and law has been introduced. Apparently, the attempt of using Bengali language in the legal arena has been accelerated. However, the obstacles are yet to be removed completely.

Key Words: Bengali language, Legal practice, Constitution, Law enforcement.
