Abstract: Aswini Kumar Dutta (1856-1923) was a pioneer of Bengal Renaissance and one of the greatest heroes in the fight against British rule. He was a teacher, patron of education, social reformer, lawyer, author, politician, philosopher and spiritualist. His generosity and secularism made him an unparallel leader of eastern Bengal. His political career started with joining the Indian National Congress (1886). He greatly contributed to as a leader in the Swadeshi Movement in Barisal. Later he played a key role in forming Swadesh Bandhab Samiti, organizing the Bengal provincial conference in 1906, Khilafat and Non-cooperation movements and the Steamer strike. He was elected the first President of Barisal District Congress (1921). He initiated and expanded nationalism, non-communal national politics, humanism and many other benevolent activities. Aswini Kumar was fluent in a number of languages like English, Bangla, Persian, Gurumuki and so forth. He was a great orator. Aswini Kumar Dutta, a multi-talented person and earnest worker, was not only a leader of Barisal but also a popular leader of undivided Bengal. The aim of this article is to evaluate the career of this great man and his role in contemporary politics and society.
