Abstract: The British East India Company took over the administration of Chittagong in 1760. Hundred years later, balancing with the Indian subcontinent, a municipal governance system was formed in Chittagong. In 1864, the municipality began undertaking systematic urban development initiatives. In the discussed article, it is mentioned that in 1875, when a decision was made to construct public toilets in the city under the order of municipality chairman and district magistrate TM Kirkwood, local residents joined together to protest against it. Primarily, in this case we see two major reasons. First of all, the purdah system was affected and secondly, the tax imposed by the authority to use the toilet was seen as unnecessary. As a result, public dissatisfaction increased and the administration had to abolish it. In the 19th century, among Indian locals, anti-British dissatisfaction surged. An attempt has been made in this essay to present this event.
